Luxury can go hand in hand with sustainability

M-real presents its beautycare boards at Luxe Pack 2011 Monaco, Stand RC16

M-real will be emphasising the sustainability of its fresh forest fibre boards, as well as the outstanding surface properties that make them ideal for such products as fragrances, cosmetics and toiletries.  M-real’s lightweight boards designed for the beautycare market include Carta Elega, Carta Integra and Carta Solida.  It will also be showing its luxury cast-coated Chromolux range of boards and label papers produced at the German M-real Zanders Gohrsmühle mill.

“Fresh forest fibres are the only fibres we use in our cartonboards and come direct from Nordic forests to our nearest mills,” says Christophe Baudry, Area Sales Director Cartonboards of M-real Consumer Packaging.  “We can trace all the fibres we use back to the forest source, primarily in Finland where legislation enforces sustainable forest management and over 95% of forests are certified.  Our fibres are naturally pure and clean, and any additives are closely monitored to ensure chemical safety and compliance with EU regulations.  Fresh forest fibres make the most durable cartons because they are longer and stronger, so packaging stays in good shape – a vital factor for premium quality products,” he adds.

M-real is self-sufficient in its pulp supply, so can ensure the consistency of its boards, which helps reduce stoppages and waste in conversion.  Fresh fibres are also important in the development of lightweight boards, which help promote sustainability by consuming fewer resources, reducing transport weights and producing less waste at the end of the packaging’s life.

By using M-real’s lightweight boards, yields are increased and costs reduced throughout the packaging’s life.  Because they have high stiffness and bulk, they can be specified for luxury applications, providing the quality feel that consumers find reassuring.  Their brilliant visual appearance enables attractive print results, and their high brightness leaves unprinted areas with a clean look.

M-real will rebuild the Kyro board machine, producing Carta Elega, towards the end of November 2011. The mill’s capacity will increase by 40 000 tpa to 190 000 tpa. The Kyro board machine rebuild is part of M-real’s cartonboard investment programme 2011–2012, targeted at improving productivity, availability and service.  Also as a part of the investment programme M-real Simpele mill’s annual capacity was raised by 80 000 tonnes to 300 000 tonnes in June and annual capacity at M-real Äänekoski, producing Carta Integra and Carta Solida, is planned to be increased by 30 000 tonnes to 240 000 tonnes in spring 2012.

M-real is also investing in a biopower plant at the Kyro mill site as the company is committed to decreasing CO2 emissions and use of energy derived from fossil fuels.  When complete in autumn 2012, the plant will contribute to a 100,000 tpa reduction of CO2 – equivalent to the annual emissions of around 60,000 cars.
