FAQs
Answers to the most frequently asked safety questions

What is important for consumers in product safety?
Usually consumers pay highest attention to possible health risks, as well as odour and taint transfer from the packaging. Fresh forest fibres Metsä Board uses in board production are an answer to these requirements.

What are fibres?
Fibres are small cells bonded together in wood. They are the main raw material for board, paper and pulp.

What benefits do fresh forest fibres have?
The fresh forest fibres Metsä Board uses come from sustainably managed, renewable Nordic forests. They are naturally pure and offer a clean slate to work with. Being light and stiff they provide our customers with more cartons for the same weight compared to some other cartonboard grades. Fresh fibre based products also form the basis for recycled fibre papers and boards. Furthermore, when they can't be recycled they are suitable for incineration and compostable.

How do you ensure the safety of raw materials?
European regulation 1935/2004 requires that the origin of all materials and articles intended for contact with food must be traceable at least one step in either direction. The fresh forest fibre Metsä Board uses can be traced back to the forest logging site. We also employ dedicated experts who are responsible for ensuring chemical safety and compliance with regulations. In addition, we continually have our products and production facilities tested by independent laboratories.

How do you ensure safety at mills?
All Metsä Board board mills are certified with ISO 22000, the international food safety management standard. Furthermore, our boards meet the requirements of German recommendation XXXVI of BfR and USA regulations of FDA. We also require strict hygiene from all subcontractors.

How do your personnel take safety into account?
At our mills and at Metsä Board in general, good training is a basic requirement and personal development is encouraged. We think that knowing the process thoroughly supports safety at mills so our people acquire multiple skills. For safety at work we set concrete targets for which we strive.

Are your boards safe for the environment?
Yes, they are. Metsä Board lightweight boards save raw materials, energy and water and generate less waste in the end of the life cycle. Our wood comes from sustainably managed forests, encouraging the preservation and growth of forests with all their benefits. Based on primary wood fibre, our boards are also a good raw material for recycling.
