Avanta Prima keeps a 60-year-old game fresh for new generations

The Star of Africa has kept its place as the most popular board game in Finland through generations. Originally designed by Kari Mannerla in 1951, the game has remained virtually unchanged for 60 years. The Star of Africa has sold close to four million copies and been translated into sixteen languages.

The game is made by Martinex, a family-owned producer and wholesaler of gifts, household items and toys. As choosing the right materials is important, Martinex trusts the printing of the box to the experts at a Finnish printing house, currently Kirjapaino Keili.

Strength to protect the classic

The box, which is printed on Avanta Prima 335 g/m2, needs to be strong enough to protect the game, hold together and look good. At the same time, it has to be easy to fold.

”The most important requirements for the cartonboard are printability as well as die-cutting and gluing properties. The material has to run smoothly in all stages of the production process,” explains Mika Kaverinen from Kirjapaino Keili.
