Metsä Board looks at the bio-based future at Empack 2014

Metsä Board is showing its portfolio of lightweight cartonboards and linerboards, as well as its Packaging Services, at Empack in Helsinki, emphasising how they contribute to a future built on bio-based packaging.

“Our boards are all based on traceable and renewable fresh forest fibres. They are recyclable, biodegradable, and have a reduced environmental impact,” says Terhi Kempe, Sales Manager Finland and Baltics for Metsä Board. “They are pure and safe for sensitive products such as food and healthcare, with odour and taint neutrality making them ideal for direct food contact.”

Three new boards are on show: Carta Dedica, ideal for food service; coated Modo Northern Light liners providing new options in lightweight corrugated boxes and microflute; and Carta Allura, developed for the premium packaging segment.

Metsä Board is also presenting its Packaging Services, which offer new packaging solutions to complete a company’s product portfolio. “Paperboard can provide inspiration for so many packaging applications, with different boards – or other materials - combined to produce innovative and functional packaging designs,” says Jarkko Tuominen, Director Packaging Services EMEA.

Metsä Board is using the show to discuss its participation in the New Tree (Uusi Puu) project, aimed at increasing awareness of the wood-based bioeconomy and wood-fibre based bio solutions. The campaign is already having an impact on opinion leaders in Finland, showing them that a bioeconomy strategy can provide competitive, sustainable solutions and create new jobs.
