Sustainability targets and progress

Our sustainability targets and the annual progress from 2013 to 2018 are demonstrated below. 

Our new ambitious strategic sustainability 2030 objectives were launched in early 2019 in line with Metsä Group’s renewed strategy, and in the future we will report our sustainability performance according to the sustainability 2030 objectives. 

In addition, Metsä Board is committed to the Science Based Targets initiative to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions to meet the goal of the Paris Agreement: limiting global warming to less than two degrees.


   

Ethical business

Metsä Board’s target is to train all employees in the Code of Conduct. We made good progress in 2018.

Safety at work

Metsä Board’s target is to annually improve the lost-time accident frequency rate (LTA1) by 10%, while the long-term goal is to have zero accidents. In 2018, the frequency of accidents increased compared to 2017 meaning that we still need to focus more on daily safety practices.

Well-being at work

Metsä Board’s target is to keep sickness absenteeism rate below 3%.

Wood

Metsä Board’s target is to support sustainable forest management and to maintain the share of certified wood in its operations above 80%.

Climate

Metsä Board’s target is to reduce fossil CO2 emissions by 30% per product tonne from the 2009 level. Although we have already reached this target, we will continue to cut our fossil CO2 emissions.

Energy

Metsä Board’s target is to improve energy efficiency by 12% from the 2009 level by 2020. In 2018, we almost reached this target.
