Sustainability targets and progress

Metsä Board's sustainability targets are in line with Metsä Group's targets, with the exception for energy efficiency for which Metsä Board has set its own target.

In addition, we are committed to the Science Based Targets initiative to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions to meet the goal of the Paris Agreement: limiting global warming to less than two degrees.

Our eight sustainability targets and the annual progress are demonstrated below.

   

Ethical business

Metsä Board’s target is to train all employees in the Code of Conduct, and we will continue to focus on increasing the coverage of this training.

Safety at work

Metsä Board’s target is to annually improve the lost-time accident frequency rate (LTA1) by 10%. Our long-term goal is to have zero accidents.

Well-being at work

Metsä Board’s target is to keep sickness absenteeism rate below 3%.

Wood

Metsä Board’s target is to support sustainable forest management and to maintain the share of certified wood in its operations above 80%.

Logistics

In 2015, Metsä Group set a target for ensuring the sustainability of its main logistics flows. At the end of 2017, all our 481 main logistics partners included in the sustainability survey fulfilled Metsä Group's sustainability criteria. Partners included in the survey covered 90% of our total annual spend on logistics services.

     

Climate

Metsä Board’s target is to reduce fossil CO2 emissions by 30% per product tonne from the 2009 level. Although we have already reached this target, we will continue to cut our CO2 emissions.

Energy

Metsä Board’s target is to improve energy efficiency by 12% from the 2009 level by 2020. We have made progress in reaching this target but still have work to do.

Resource efficiency

Metsä Board’s target is to reduce process water use per product tonne by 17% from the 2010 level by 2020. We reached this target in 2017.
