We offer sustainable choices

The fresh fibre that Metsä Board uses to make paperboards is a premium raw material: it is highly functional, light and strong, while also cleaner than recycled fibre. The lighter weight of our board reduces the emissions generated by transport, saving on both environmental impacts and costs. Lightweight packages also generate less waste. At the end of their life cycle, Metsä Board’s paperboards can easily be recycled, burned or composted.

All of Metsä Board’s mills have international ISO food safety certification. Metsä Board’s suppliers and subcontractors are also required to adhere to the same strict hygiene requirements, to ensure that our paperboards are protected against contamination until the end of their life cycle.

Turning renewable wood into sustainable, safe and recyclable products

Safer products for the environment and people

As Metsä Board’s paperboards are made of fresh fibre, they are suitable for products with high quality requirements, for high-end packaging, and for demanding applications with strict safety standards such as food packaging.

We manage hygiene and product safety risks throughout our supply chains from product development to production and distribution, by using materials of known origin which meet or exceed all legislative requirements. All of our board mills are certified as complying with the ISO 22000 food safety management standard, for instance.

Our product development considers even the smallest details to make sure that our products are safe both for the environment and for the people who will use them.

We strive to supply products and services that meet all of our customers’ needs. We want to be recognised for our innovations and customer-oriented solutions, as well as for our high environmental standards. Our products are based on renewable fresh forest fibre, and they are fully recyclable. They are safe for both people and the environment.

Lightweighting

Metsä Board focuses on lightweight paperboards that offer the advantages of heavier grades in terms of stiffness and thickness, while using much lower quantities of raw materials for the same application.

Lighter packaging products mean reduced environmental impacts at every stage of the product life cycle – including lower transport weights and less waste. Thanks to their quality-consistency, our products also perform smoothly and reliably on printing and converting machines and packaging lines, so this reduces production waste too.

Because our paperboards are mainly made of fresh fibre, which provides the required strength at lower grammages than recycled fibers, the required printing area or package can be produced from lower quantities of raw materials.

Our products can be recycled

Metsä Board’s paperboard products are designed to be recycled. In Europe, paperboard packaging has the highest rate of recycling when compared to other packaging material categories such as glass, metal and plastics. (www.cepi.org).

Recycling materials such as wood fibres is an important way to save natural resources. Recycling should ideally be carried out as close to the point of collection as possible, rather than shipping recovered materials off to faraway markets for reuse.

Paper and board have many advantages when it comes to recycling:

  • Consumers can easily identify recyclable paper and board.

  • Householders are willing to sort and separately bin paper without any refund or cash incentive.

  • Municipal collections for waste paper are well established.

  • Paper and paperboard have been made from waste materials for hundreds of years, so the related processes are widely understood.

All Metsä Board’s paperboards are recyclable. Our products are produced from superior fibre material, so they offer a high recycling durability. They can also be incinerated for energy recovery or composted at the end of their life-cycle.
